reasons to remain optimistic
Justin Fox is the business and economics columnist at TIME magazine. He’s posting daily on his blog “The Curious Capitalist” about what’s going on in the economy. In his post “Call Me Mr. Sunshine” he offers five reasons for economic optimism:
Call Me Mr. Sunshine
Actually he gives only four reasons to remain optimistic about the U.S. economy:
1.) “The stock market is no longer overpriced”
2.) “The U.S. government is on the case”
3.) “Consumers are adjusting to the new economic reality - and fast”
4.) “Reinvention and change are what the U.S. is all about”
He continues asking readers for a fifth reason.
Here’s my suggestion:
5.) President Obama’s energy, health care and education program
As you can read in my post “What does not kill us only makes us stronger“, Obama listed energy as one of his top priorities.
Mr. Fox has already said that “the economy needs to find new drivers of growth and prosperity”. Obama’s renewable energy plan will strengthen the alternative energy sector. By boosting solar, wind, geothermal and marine energy as well as accelerating the electrification of personal mobility, President Obama helps to create many good-paying jobs in America. Energy tech will become a new growth engine and probably a major export industry. In the process, the United States can reduce its dependence on oil imports. Consequently, more money is kept locally instead of being shipped to OPEC countries and carbon dioxide emissions will come down, too.
Some quotes from President Obama’s speech:
“the United States will emerge stronger than before”
” The only way this century will be another American century is if we confront at last the price of our dependence on oil, and the high cost of health care, the schools that aren’t preparing our children and the mountain of debt they stand to inherit”
” the three areas that are absolutely critical to our economic future: energy, health care, and education”
” We know the country that harnesses the power of clean, renewable energy will lead the 21st century.”
” In a global economy where the most valuable skill you can sell is your knowledge, a good education is no longer just a pathway to opportunity, it is a prerequisite”
It looks like Obama really understands today’s problems and challenges while he has a vision and concepts of how to fix it.
