my Little India adventure

Today (my 5th day in SG) I went to Little India after I had taken some nice photos of Singapore’s skyline from the rooftop garden of the Esplanade Theaters in the early morning.

As I’ve now seen the most important sighs (the CBD, Singapore River, Clark’s Quay, Fort Canning, Vivo City, Sentosa Island, China Town, Bugis, Orchard Road, … amongst others) and since friends had said that Little India is another great place for shopping, I got on the MRT to Little India station. Shortly after I stepped out MRT station, it began to rain like I’ve never seen it before. Unlike locals, I tried to cross the street to get to the other side but within the matter of seconds I was sopping wet…

Actually I first was quite amused and decided to check out some of the numerous little shops there to wait until the thunderstorm was over. Shopping in Little India was a great experience. Although some Indian shop assistants are committed sellers and they won’t let you go before you have tried on at least 20 shirts and 10 pants, it was a nice experience. Finally I ended up with eight shirts – actually I was only looking for one shirt – but I didn’t feel like being ripped off since the Thailand-made shirts are all of good quality and design as well as incredibly cheap.

Afterwards I had lunch at one of the many small restaurants lining the streets of every neighborhood in Singapore. The food – very spicy curry chicken with rice and some vegetables I’ve never seen before – was delicious like at all the other places where I’ve been to in SG so far, but the smells and sounds in Little India were unique. I somehow feel like I’ve visited India, China and Malaysia without having left the island of Singapore.

When I had finished my tour of Little India, I chose not to use the MRT but to walk. Consequently I could see even more of Little India’s tiny side streets and some corners where tourists seldom go. After about 30 minutes I was finally in Bugis, my favorite shopping spot and dining location in Singapore. Especially “Bugis Street” is great, it is Singapore’s biggest shopping street with hundreds of small stores and food stalls. From what I’ve experienced so far, Bugis is the place where you can find some of the most interesting souvenirs (like shirts, bags, accessories, pants, ….) at very low prices. Moreover, the atmosphere is overwhelming. Especially in the evening hours Bugis is very crowded and there’s music everywhere. Most buildings are illuminated in a fancy way and you can choose from a wide range of beverages and snacks that are healthy, tasty and cheap. Be it Thai coconuts, Durian fruits, pancakes filled with all kinds of tropical fruits, rice and shrimps wrapped in Banana leafs, smoothies, chicken and rice dishes, and much more you can’t even imagine.

I’ll upload some photos soon…

In the evening, I went to see the show “Songs Of The Sea” on Sentosa Island. It was quite entertaining, though a bit cheesy.
