GM China: the crown jewel in General Motor’s global operations

I highly recommend you to read the article “The Other GM” by TIME’s Bill Powell:

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1896626,00.html

The article outlines an interesting scenario in which Shanghai GM might produce Chevys and Buicks in China at a tenth of the labor costs as in Detroit but at the same quality and export them to the United States to compete against rivals and regain market share.

It’s to be seen whether China can emerge as a major car manufacturing country in the medium term. But it stand out that China’s car market has grown to the same size as the U.S. market. But in contrast, the Chinese auto market is growing at a pace of 8% this year and it’s the only remaining major car market where there’s still money to be made.
