a short trip to Lisbon
Today I`m in the Portuguese capital one day before the general elections. According to recent polls it looks like the ruling Socialists will win tomorrow`s election. Unemployment and a huge budget deficit are the two most pressing issues facing the next government. Current Prime Minister Jose Socrates who has been maneuvering Portugal through these economically difficult times since the outbreak of the financial crisis is expected to be capable of maintaining stability in the country as well as in the political landscape.
Lisbon is a typical southern European port city with its slightly chaotic charm, the numerous ancient buildings dating back to the “Great Age of Discovery” in the 15th and 16th centuries when Portugal was a major colonial power and the famous explorer Vasco da Gama explored the sea route to India.
Friday nights the narrow streets in the historic downtown district are packed with young people partying until the early hours of the morning.
Photos to come soon!
